Asbestos training target 'smashed'

Calls for training providers to offer free sessions to tradesmen at risk of asbestos exposure have received an "overwhelming" response. The Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) target of 4,000 hours of free training has been "smashed", it said, with 7,987 hours of classroom training pledged along with 5,570 web-based hours. It is part of the HSE's Hidden Killer campaign, which seeks to highlight the risks faced by workers in certain industries and how they can avoid having to seek help from an asbestosis lawyer later in life. The free training is available throughout October and November and is aimed at tradesmen such as joiners, electricians and plumbers, around 20 whom die every week from asbestos-related diseases. Training in Russian, Polish and Romanian will also be offered to cater for the thousands of foreign workers in those jobs. Karen Clayton, HSE director for long latency health risks, said: "The response has been overwhelming and has completely exceeded our expectations. There's been a real groundswell of support from a whole range of training providers." It comes after Marks and Spencer was fined over £1 million for exposing workers and members of the public to asbestos at two stores in Reading and Bournemouth. Posted by Paul Stevens
