Southampton council workers strike to defend jobs

Workers at Southampton City Council are striking today (October 6th) with trade union support from Unite.
The industrial action began at midnight and involves more than 1,000 workers from across the city.
A range of services will be affected, including social work, street cleaning and port health.
Today's action is the latest in a series of strikes after the Conservative-led council imposed a 5.5 per cent pay cut.
It was originally sparked when the local authority announced that it would sack employees and re-engage them on poorer contracts.
Last week, the unions Unite and Unison criticised the council for its plan to borrow £100 million to spend on capital projects while forcing through the salary cuts.
Ian Woodland, Unite regional officer, claims the Tory administration "refuses to negotiate a fairer way forward".
"We have put alternatives on the table which will have helped the council manage its budget yet retain the services people value," he added. "The fact that the council rejected these speaks volumes - its leadership wants a scrap to show its political machismo."
