Govt signals motorway speed limit rise

Plans to raise the speed limit on motorways like the M3 and M27 to 80mph have been unveiled by the government.
It suggests vehicles are much safer than when the limit was set in 1965 and that allowing motorists to drive faster would generate economic benefits.
Road safety groups, however, have warned that the proposal could lead to the kind of accidents that result in people seeking help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
Brake, which campaigns for safer roads, says there is a direct correlation between increased speeds and deaths.
"The tragedies on Britain's motorways, often in treacherous weather conditions and due to all sorts of causes, ranging from driver fatigue, to vehicle technical problems, to dangerous driving, are real and inevitable and more inevitable the faster the speeds," explains Mary Williams, chief executive of the charity.
She called on the government to abandon the consultation on raising the speed limit and instead focus on reviewing the safety of the entire trunk road network in the UK.
