CBI warning over employment law changes

The CBI has issued a stern warning over new legislation that will likely see more businesses seeking help from an employment contract law service. From tomorrow (October 1st), Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) will be implemented, providing temporary workers with some of the basic rights on pay and working conditions as permanent staff. Saturday will also witness the end of the Default Retirement Age (DRA). CBI chief policy director Katja Hall suggests that these changes are "counter-productive" and says the timing "couldn't be worse". The new rules will act as a "brake" on employment, she argued, calling on the government to "remove unnecessary gold-plating or reform the directive". She is equally critical of the scrapping of the DRA, saying the government must act to ensure employers can talk about retirement with workers without fear of them seeking unfair dismissal compensation claim advice. "We urgently need an effective new framework for retirement planning," she adds. Her comments come as Acas warns employers that they could face £5,000 fines if they breach AWR.
