HSE focuses on ladders to improve safety

A new scheme aimed at improving workplace safety could lead to fewer employees seeking help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is behind the Ladder Exchange Initiative, which provides businesses with an easy way to replace broken, damaged or bent ladders and trade them in for safe new ones.

Running until the end of November, the project is aimed at tackling one of the major causes of work-related injuries - falls from height.

This type of accident was responsible for nearly 7,000 reportable injuries in the UK in 2009/10, HSE figures show.

Since its launch, Ladder Exchange has resulted in over 8,000 potentially lethal ladders being removed from use.

Commenting on a case earlier this year, HSE inspector Martin Giles said: "Falls from height are the biggest cause of workplace deaths and it's crucial that employers make sure work is properly planned, appropriately supervised and that sufficient measures are put in place to protect staff and members of the public from the risks."
