National Trust: Brownfield sites must be developed first

The National Trust has weighed into the debate surrounding contaminated land and planning, arguing that it Brownfield sites must be developed before Greenfield ones. Responding to the organisation's ten-point list of demands for the National Planning Policy Framework, the British Property Federation (BPF) said it agrees that priority must be given to regenerating old industrial sites. However, the property industry body said it was "concerned" that the National Trust does not place more emphasis on the rights of businesses in the planning consultation. "Businesses should be just as entitled as residents to have a say in how their areas are developed and communities need jobs if they are not to wither and die – or become just dormitory settlements," said BPF chief executive Liz Peace. She also expressed concern over neighbourhoods being able to thwart evidence-based plans developed by elected local authorities to provide "much-needed" homes. The comments from the BPF and the National Trust come as part of a wide-ranging government consultation on reforming the planning system. Posted by Alex McLean
