Worker's head injuries were 'entirely preventable'

A company has been fined £20,000 after an accident left a worker with severe head injuries, in a case that shows how safety failings can lead to employees seeking help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton. Kent-based WE Roberts (Corrugated) Ltd was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for the incident, which it said was "entirely preventable". In 2009, the worker was trying to pull a pallet of cardboard boxes across his trailer from the driver's side to the curb side while making a delivery in Eastbourne. The strapping snapped, causing the man to fall 1.5 metres onto the pavement below. He suffered serious head injuries and has not been able to return to work since. HSE Inspector Michelle Taylor said: "The company failed to adequately consider the risks that delivery drivers face when they are not on site. "This led to this severe and entirely preventable incident which has had such a long-lasting and devastating effect on this worker." Falls from height remain one of the biggest causes of workplace accidents in the UK, accounting for nearly 7,000 reportable injuries ion 2009/10, according to HSE figures. Posted by Paul Stevens
