Rent arrears rise reveals debt problems

There could be an increase in litigation and dispute resolution cases between landlords and tenants as the number of people in rent arrears rises. Debt advice charity helpline National Debtline has seen an 84 per cent jump in rent arrears calls since the credit crunch started in 2007. It suggests that rising rental costs could pile debt concerns onto people already facing the kind of debts that can lead to personal insolvency. Joanna Elson, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, which runs National Debtline, said: "It is clear high rent costs are becoming more and more difficult for people to meet. "A few years ago many people in today's rent market would be planning on buying their first home, but now it seems they are struggling to even pay the rent." The charity says it is important for anyone in rental arrears to seek immediate help to avoid being taken to court or evicted. It notes that with many types of tenancy the landlord can take court action quickly if the tenant falls behind with their rent. Posted by Georgina Price
