M&S fined £1m for asbestos failings

Marks and Spencer (M&S) has been fined £1 million for offences relating to safe handling of asbestos at its stores in Reading and Bournemouth.

At a previous hearing, it was revealed that the retailer, among other failings, did not allocate sufficient time and space for the removal of asbestos-containing materials at the Reading store.

M&S and three of its contractors were prosecuted because they exposed both workers and members of the public to materials that could lead to people seeking help from an asbestosis lawyer.

PA Realisations Ltd was fined £200 and Styles & Wood Limited fined £100,000 for their part in the work at the Reading store.

Meanwhile, Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd was fined £50,000 for breaches that took place at M&S's Commercial Road store in Bournemouth.

HSE southern head of operations for construction Richard Boland said: "This outcome should act as a wake-up call that any refurbishment programmes involving asbestos-containing materials must be properly resourced, both in terms of time and money - no matter what."

It comes as the HSE calls on training providers to offer 4,000 hours' worth of free sessions on asbestos handling to people in high-risk industries as the building trade.
