Contractor fined for asbestos failings

A demolition contractor has been fined in a case that highlights when workers could find themselves needing help from an asbestosis lawyer.

Walsh Plant Hire and Demolition Contractors Ltd of Pontypridd ignored repeated warnings to manage the safe removal of asbestos during work on the demolition of a former Revlon factory in Maesteg, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said.

Inspectors issued a prohibition notice in February 2010, as work to remove asbestos cement sheeting debris was likely to generate asbestos dust, which could have posed a health risk.

A subsequent visit to the site found the company was failing to follow its own management plan to safely handle asbestos.

"Asbestos is the single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK," said HSE inspector Phil Nicolle.

"This prosecution sends a clear message to demolition contractors that they cannot ignore the safe practices required to work with asbestos cement products."

Asbestos-related illness kills around 4,000 people in the UK year, HSE figures show.
