BIS highlights progress on contaminated land and planning

The government has made "real progress" in simplifying business red tape, including regulations and guidance governing contaminated land and planning, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has said. In addition to the simplification of the regulations and guidance governing contaminated land, thereby reducing excessive remediation, BIS says the need for Local Authority inspection has been reduced by extending the scope of self-certification of building work. Construction dispute resolution has been made easier, as BIS notes it has reduced the likelihood of some commercial disputes in the sector. Business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk said: "During 2011 we have made real progress in cutting the costs of red tape for businesses." He added: "There is much more to do - especially so that businesses really notice the difference - but this first year is very promising." Other examples of simplifications include making it easier to inspect patents, through free access to online files, as well as reducing the burden on companies when they update information on public records, BIS says.
