Cohabitation 'behind falling divorce rate'

A rise in the number of couples living together before marriage may be leading to fewer people seeking advice on family law, mediation and relationships. According to new research from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), a fall in the divorce rate in the UK has been accompanied by an unprecedented number of people cohabiting. "There has been a decline in recent years in the proportion of marriages ending in separation or divorce by the fifth," the study reports.
The authors suggest that cohabitation has "played a role in this incipient decline" and is acting as a "firewall" preventing fragile relationships progressing towards marriage and then divorce. However, the ONS notes that compared with 20 years ago, more cohabiting couples separate and fewer marry. "Cohabitation remains a relatively short-term type of relationship," the authors add. It comes shortly after the government dropped plans to extend property rights to cohabiting couples, as well as inheritance rights to those who had a child together, amid concerns it could damage marriage. Far from working against it, however, the ONS suggest that cohabitation could be seen as "promoting rather than competing with marriage". Posted by Georgina Price
