Davey calls for employment tribunal overhaul

Mediation services should be used to settle employment disputes more often, Liberal Democrat employment relations minister Edward Davey has said.
Addressing delegates at his party's conference, he called for an overhaul of the current employment tribunal system.
"For too long, our employment tribunal system has been bad for employers and bad for employees," the minister argued.
He said it is his "passion" to oversee a "radical shift from confrontation to conciliation".
Mr Davey went on to say he is "proud" to have ended legalised age discrimination at work, referring to the scrapping of the Default Retirement Age.
The minister also called for "radical" reform to maternity and paternity leave to make it more flexible for parents and employers.
Steps towards promoting greater use of mediation services to settle a range of disputes have been made by Mr Davey's colleagues at the Ministry of Justice.
Conservative justice minister Jonathan Djanogly led calls for mediation to be a prerequisite for divorcing couples before they go through the courts.
Jonathan Gray, employment law partner at Lamport Bassitt, commented: "With the prospect of the government introducing issue fees for Employment Tribunal claims and making it easier for legal costs to be claimed by the winning party then early access to good mediation services may become a life line for claimants as a means to try to resolve disputes with their employers before they become too costly and prohibitive."
