New guidance on employment law for interns



The government has published new guidance for employers who offer work experience and internships, which could reduce the need for businesses to use an employment law solicitor service over the minimum wage.

Updated guidance from Business Link and DirectGov clarifies the rules regarding internships by stating that all people who are classed as "workers", regardless of their job title, must be paid at least the national minimum wage.

The document includes a new worker checklist and examples of case studies for employers to refer to when they are unsure of somebody's status.

Employment relations minister Edward Davey said internships and work experience are valuable in bridging the gap between education and the workplace, as well as widening the talent pool for businesses.

"Fairness though is absolutely paramount with all placements. When a worker is entitled to the minimum wage, they should be paid it and we will continue to enforce the law," he added.

It follows news that the government has launched a new scheme designed to reduce the amount of red tape surrounding apprenticeships.
