Govt wants to make London a 'legal hub' for the world

Justice secretary Kenneth Clarke has outlined plans to make London a centre for corporate legal services as well as a financial hub.

Speaking to legal and business leaders today (September 14th), Mr Clarke said the government is devising an action plan to help UK legal services to expand into new markets like Brazil, Turkey and South East Asia.

The new Rolls Building, which opens in December, will also provide a modern centre for the Commercial Court and the Technology and Construction Court.

Mr Clarke said: "The rule of law is one of our greatest exports but there is more that we can do to help UK legal services thrive.

"I am prepared to wear out much shoe leather promoting the UK as lawyer and adviser to the world."

The justice secretary also highlighted the growing trend for overseas visitors to use UK courts for dispute resolution, while the government wants more people at home to take the mediation route before embarking on often lengthy and costly court procedures.
