Unite backs calls to lower workplace dust limits

Unite is backing calls from the TUC for dust level limits to be lowered amid concerns about safe exposure limits, which currently could lead to industrial disease claims.
The unions have worked together to produce guidance to members about dust in the workplace and want a review of legal limits.
It comes as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launches a new initiative that could see fewer people seek help from an asbestosis lawyer.
Part of the Hidden Killer campaign, it is calling on training providers to deliver 4,000 free hours of courses to people in high risk sectors to help limit their exposure to asbestos.
"Too many Unite members are being exposed to dangerous levels of dust at work," said Bud Hudspith, Unite national health and safety adviser. "The current dust standards are not good enough and there is strong scientific evidence to prove it."
Unite wants the HSE to launch a general campaign to reduce dust exposure in all workplaces and to improve the dust standards that currently exist.
