Council in court over asbestos exposure

A local authority and a refurbishment company have been prosecuted for exposing workers to asbestos.
Highlighting how easy it is for an asbestosis lawyer to be called in after unsafe refurbishment work, Birmingham City Council and Solihull Supplies Ltd were fined after failing to carry out a proper risk assessment.
Two workers were charged with removing tiles from seven rooms at the William Cowper Community Primary School in Newtown.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found the tiles contained brown asbestos, exposing the workers and the school caretaker to the substance.
HSE principal inspector Jo Anderson said it is "unacceptable" for people to be put in danger like this.
"Because of the failing of the council and the firms involved, three people now have to live with the knowledge they may become ill from lung disease in the future."
The HSE estimates around 4,000 to die from asbestos-related diseases every year in the UK.
