UK domestic mergers and acquisitions values nearly double

Companies are spending more on mergers and acquisitions solicitor services as new figures show the value of UK domestic deals nearly doubled in the second quarter of 2011.
Expenditure on acquisitions in the UK by British firms rose to £2.2 billion in Q2, up from £1.3 billion in Q1.
However, spending abroad fell, with the value of acquisitions of foreign enterprises by UK firms more than halving from £20.7 billion to £10.2 billion over the period.
Despite the drop, the Q2 figure is the second-highest value for acquisitions abroad by UK companies since the first three months of 2008, according to the Office for National Statistics data.
Meanwhile, the value of acquisitions in the UK by foreign companies rose to £8.5 billion in Q2 from £5.4 billion in Q1.
It follows a report from Experian that showed a seven per cent year-on-year rise in the value of transactions in the first half of 2011, despite a 15 per cent fall in the number of deals.
Wendy Smith, business development manager at Experian Corpfin, suggested that "a degree of tentativeness" remains in the market.
