Dust level limits must be reduced, union claims

Many people may still be seeking help from an asbestosis lawyer for industrial disease claims because dust level limits are too high.

The TUC believes "urgent action" is needed to reduce dust levels in the workplace, which it notes leads to thousands of deaths per year.

Asbestos alone is estimated to kill 4,000 people annually in the UK, according to Health and Safety Executive figures.

There is "clear scientific evidence" that current limits for inhalable and respirable dust should be lower, the TUC argues.

It cites the Institute of Medicine, which says current British occupational exposure limits for airborne dust "are unsafe and employers should attempt to reduce exposures to help prevent further cases of respiratory disease amongst their workers".

A "significant number" of workers could be developing reductions in their lung function from common dusts found in the workplace such as silica, coal dust, talc and kaolin, the union added.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber warned: "Given the scale of the problem we need an urgent examination of both the current standards and their enforcement."
