HSE calls for free asbestos training

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is calling for training providers to offer free courses covering asbestos.
It has set a target of 4,000 hours of training, which is the same number of people estimated to die from exposure to the material every year.
The initiative, which could help reduce the number of people who need help from an asbestosis lawyer, is aimed at tradesmen such as joiners, electricians and plumbers.
It is thought around 20 people in these high-risk occupations die every week because of asbestos.
Karen Clayton, HSE director for long latency health risks, explained that the scheme is a continuation of its long-standing Hidden Killer campaign.
"There is sadly little we can do to help those who are already suffering the often fatal effects of asbestos exposure in the workplace, but we can prevent this hidden killer claiming another generation," she added.
Support for the initiative comes from the Asbestos Victims Support Groups Forum, the Independent Asbestos Training Providers and the UK Asbestos Training Association.
