Construction firms fined for 'appalling' working conditions

Two construction companies have been fined for "appalling" standards at a building site in London. In a case that highlights how companies' safety failings could lead to workers seeking a personal injury lawyer in Southampton, principal contractor Kubik Homes Ltd and subcontractor Bellway Developments Ltd were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). City of London Magistrates' Court was told that there was no safe access to the first floor under construction at the St Mary's Road site in Wimbledon. The work areas around the site were uneven, the HSE said, adding that they were littered with obstructions and trip hazards. HSE inspector Loraine Charles said: "Although there was no incident, the potential danger to the workers was very high. "Conditions on this site were simply appalling. This is a shocking example of bad management of a construction site and it is a miracle that no one was injured." In 2010/11, there were 50 fatal injuries in the construction industry in the UK, a rate of 2.4 deaths per 100,000 workers, according to HSE figures. Posted by Paul Stevens
