EHRC: Flexible working can close gender pay gap

Women seeking advice from an employment discrimination claim solicitor could find flexible working is the answer. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has said businesses can combat gender inequality within their organisations by expanding flexible work practices and improving transparency. On Wednesday (August 31st) the Chartered Management Institute reported that women were winning the pay war, with female junior executives being paid more per year than their male counterparts. However, it remains a different picture for more senior managerial staff, with the 2011 National Management Salary Survey showing disparity of over £10,000 per annum between male and female managers nearer the top of the corporate ladder. Gender gaps exist both in terms of salary and seniority, the EHRC's Sex and Power report recently highlighted. "We're very keen on flexible working practices – allowing people to work part time, at home [and at] different hours," a spokesperson for the organisation said. "It's basically about businesses having a can-do attitude to people who have responsibilities outside of work as well." Businesses being more transparent about what they pay people and why would also go a long way to closing the gender gap, she went on to say. Posted by Georgina Price
