Unite slams HSE's draft manufacturing strategy

More people could be forced into seeking help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton, as a union claims new rules for the manufacturing sector will lead to a drop in safety standards. Responding to the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) draft manufacturing strategy, Unite criticised the government policy that lies behind it. Tony Burke, Unite assistant general secretary and head of manufacturing, claimed the plans will put manufacturing workers "at greater risk". He said the union could not support a strategy that will mean a reduction in health and safety standards. "This strategy is built on the back of cuts to the HSE and will lead to fewer inspections, less enforcement, and more deaths, injuries and ill health at work," Mr Burke added. It comes amid a range of planned reforms to health and safety laws that unions, including Unite, have said will lead to more accidents. Controversial proposals include cutting the number of workplace safety inspections by a third. Posted by Paul Stevens
