Bowling greens win planning reform reprieve

Businesses engaging a property development solicitor could find development work is held up by provisions contained in the proposed new planning laws that will protect green spaces. The government has said bowling greens and other similar public spaces will be protected from building programmes thanks to measures outlined in the National Planning Policy Framework. Under the new planning rules, communities will be able to classify green spaces such as playing pitches and local beauty spots for special protections. Such spaces are also being protected by a new Community Right to Buy, which gives local groups the opportunity to bid for publicly-used green spaces if they are facing the threat of being sold off. Communities and local government secretary Eric Pickles says the plans will ensure green spaces do not disappear. "The rights we are putting into law will make sure that local people no longer have to stand by as decisions are made beyond their control," he advised. It comes as the National Housing Federation warns that an entire generation could miss out on home ownership if property development projects do not get more support. Posted by Georgina Price
