Making a will is a 'kindness' to family members

People should have discussions about wills and inheritance tax planning with a probate solicitor to make life easier for family members, it is claimed.

Making a will is a "kindness" to those who are left after someone dies, according to Toby Harris, a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

He says: "Make a will; simply because even if the will did nothing other than appoint an executor at least there would be somebody whose job it was to get on with things."

Mr Harris went on to stress the importance of freelance workers drawing up a will, as their estates can be more complicated.

Issues about the value of the business, unpaid work and home office kit all make things a little more difficult for the self-employed.

"All of those are things that could be solved by being in a good will," Mr Harris adds.

The comments come after a report from Aviva revealed two-thirds of Brits are not having discussions about inheritance.
