Firm fined after worker suffers burns

A firm has been fined in a case that sheds light on instances when employees can turn to a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
Moughton Engineering was prosecuted after a worker suffered burns to his face and one eye in October 2010.
Jack Amey, of Caister-on-Sea, was 17 when he was involved in the accident with a toxic cleaning substance at the firm's Great Yarmouth factory.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the tub of paste slipped from his grasp and hit a bench with some of the contents landing on his face.
Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court heard the employee was unaware of the hazardous nature of the substance and should not have been using it.
Moughton Engineering was fined £6,000 after it pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety guidelines.
HSE inspector Martin Kneebone said:"This young man was let down by his employer and could have suffered far more serious injuries than he actually did, potentially even losing his sight."
It comes as the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health reminds retailers of the seriousness of exposing people to toxic substances during refurbishment works.
