Health and safety experts call for greater protection for shop workers

Health and safety experts are calling for greater protection for shop workers and customers, following cases in which people may have contacted an asbestosis lawyer.
The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is reminding retailers of the seriousness of exposing their customers to risk during refurbishment work.
It comes after Marks and Spencer was prosecuted for failing to safeguard people from asbestos during work at two stores in Reading and Bournemouth.
David Ackerley, chair of IOSH's Construction Group, said: "When any retail outlet is being refurbished those involved should be aware of the potential risks that making aesthetic and structural changes can have, not only to workers, but anyone in the vicinity."
He explained that while it is "understandable" firms may want to save money, they must not put lives at risk.
Extra "care and attention" must be taken when it comes to dealing with hazards like asbestos and respirable crystaline silica dusts, Mr Ackerley added.
Health and Safety Executive figures show that asbestos kills around 4,000 people in the UK every year.
