Woman wins damages for being 'too old'

A woman using an employment law solicitor service has won her case for age discrimination after she was told by her boss that she was too old to be working five days a week.
Anna Stirrup had initially been awarded £6,000 after her employer, Ufuoma Obahor, made hurtful comments about her age.
She was then fired from Summers Dry Cleaners in Cookstown, County Tyrone, because of her complaint, a tribunal heard.
Mrs Stirrup, who was 50 at the time of the original comments, then sought unfair dismissal compensation claim advice.
She was awarded close to £25,000 after the tribunal agreed she had been wrongly dismissed and victimised.
"Taking account of the timing of the allegations of misconduct against the claimant, we believe that the core reason for the claimant's dismissal was the fact that she had brought an age discrimination claim against the respondent," the ruling stated.
Mrs Stirrup's case was supported by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.
Anne McKernan, director of legal services at the organisation, said: "A person who complains of discrimination is entitled to be treated no differently than they would have been had they not complained."
