Businesses 'can't ignore health and safety of home workers'

Businesses need to remember that they could be liable if someone working from home has an accident and contacts a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.

According to XpertHR, it is a "myth" that employers are not responsible for the health and safety of home workers.

Some employees are even entitled to a safety inspection in their house, explained Bar Huberman, employment law editor at the firm.

"Employers' home workers have almost the same legal protection as those working from the employer's premises, and regulations require the employer to conduct an assessment of the risks to health and safety to which they are exposed while at work," she said.

As a result of an employer failing in their duty of care, an employee could be entitled to claim compensation, she added.

Her comments come as the government is urging businesses to allow people in London to work from home during the Olympics in order to ease disruption to the city's transport network.
