Nurse loses discrimination claim over uniform

A nurse has lost her discrimination case against her employer after being forced to wear trousers. Devout Christian midwife Hannah Adewole, 45, claimed that this went against her religious beliefs, as the Bible states that women should not wear men's clothes. With the help of an employment discrimination claim solicitor, she sought £7,000 from Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. An employment tribunal in East London heard that she was banned from wearing scrub dresses in theatre at City University London, despite Muslim women being allowed to alter their uniforms. Mrs Adewole, who still works for Queen's Hospital in Romford, Essex, said: "A Muslim midwife would not have been treated in such a disrespectful manner." She added: "Reading the Bible has always given me strength. I believe that the Bible is truth and that its words should be followed wholeheartedly." Rejecting her claim, the tribunal ruled that being forced to wear trousers did not disadvantage Christians. It comes after nurses were urged to pursue equal pay claims after retired hospital worker Gloria Emmanuel, 67, won her five-year battle with City and Hackney Teaching Primary Care Trust. She successfully argued that she had been paid less because she was a woman. Posted by Georgina Price
