Husband keeps family fortune in divorce ruling

A husband has been allowed to keep the bulk of his family fortune after a divorce judge ruled the "sharing principle" should not be applied in a case that could have implications for people seeking advice on family law, mediation and relationships. The couple, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were married for 25 years and were estimated to be worth between £21 million and £24 million. It's source was the father of the husband, who passed on several farms and thousands of acres of land, shares in a family company, an investment portfolio and a shooting estate to his son. Mr Justice Moylan, sitting in the Family Division of the High Court, said the wife should only receive £4.3 million of this fortune, as the wealth "was not the product of their endeavours". Instead of applying the sharing principle of assets, the judge said the settlement ought to be based on a "generous assessment" of the wife's needs. Posted by Alex McLean
