Hampshire farmers urged to stay safe over harvest period

Farmers in Hampshire are being advised on how to stay safe, reducing the chances of seeking help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
James Heweston-Brown, who runs an arable farm in Overton, Basingstoke, is encouraging others in the agriculture sector to ensure their employees remain safe, after one of his workers was left with a broken hand.
He explains that the harvest season can be a stressful time for farmers and it can be tempting to take shortcuts to get jobs finished on time.
"But they need to review whether their machinery is properly safeguarded and whether safe systems of work for dealing with blockages and maintenance have been agreed and properly communicated to staff," Mr Heweston-Brown says.
Agriculture remains one of the most dangerous industries in the UK, with 34 fatalities in 2010/11.
This equates to eight deaths per 100,000 workers, much higher than the rate in the construction (2.4) and manufacturing (1.1) industries.
