Building firms fined for poor renovation work

Two firms based in Worcestershire and a contractor have been found guilty for contravening health and safety regulations when they released asbestos fibres during an office refurbishment project.

Evanacre Colmore Row, Marchment Consulting and Roland Morewood pleaded guilty to breaking Regulations 11 (1)(a) and 16 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) uncovered a series of failings during the refurbishment of Colmore Row.

Air tests taken on several floors of the premises revealed significantly high levels of asbestos fibres. Evanacre and Marchment were each fined £7,000 and ordered to pay £1,500 in costs. Contractor Roland Morewood was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £823 in costs

HSE principal inspector Richard Lockwood said: "Asbestos is the biggest cause of occupational deaths in the UK, with an estimated 4,000 people dying every year from related diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer."

Litigants seeking a compensation claim for poor construction work are advised to contact an asbestos lawyer, who will be able to give them expert advice.
