Kirklees Council pays out £2.3m in compensation claims

Kirklees Council in Yorkshire has paid out almost £2.3 million in compensation claims over the last three years, newly released figures show.
Data obtained by the Huddersfield Daily Examiner via a Freedom of Information request reveal that Kirklees Council, which serves Batley, Dewsbury, Huddersfield and Holmfirth, paid 926 successful claims totalling £2,299,802.
More than two thirds of the claims were for damage to property such as wreckage caused by floods, failures of the social services and vehicles incurring scratches and dents from potholes.
The remainder of the claims were for personal injury, including cases of people falling over on uneven paving stones.
Robert Oxley, of the Tax Payers' Alliance, told the Huddersfield Examiner that local taxpayers appear to be footing the bill for the large sums of money being paid out in compensation claims.
"The council needs to be transparent about the reasons for the recent reductions in claims so taxpayers can be reassured that these claims aren't being hidden from them," he said.
Recently released official figures show that Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust paid out £15.3 million in 2010/11 - more than any other NHS Trust in England.
