Staffordshire schools witness rise in personal injury payouts

Personal injury payouts are on the rise in schools across Staffordshire, new figures show.
According to data published by Staffordshire County Council after a Freedom of Information request, nearly £58,000 in compensation was paid out to Staffordshire schoolchildren in 11 cases ranging from trips and slips to injuries sustained while using playground equipment, reports BBC News.
The figures show that although the number of claimants was down from 14 in the previous financial year, the amount of money paid out rose by more than 40 per cent.
The largest payout from a local school was more than £10,000 given to a child who fell over on some logs, while over £5,000 was paid out to a girl who trapped her arm and wrist while putting away a trampoline.
Ian Parry, deputy leader of Staffordshire County Council, told the BBC: "Obviously the first priority of every member of staff in every school is the safety of children but inevitably, with 400 schools, accidents will happen."
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales recently drew up an employer code to safeguard to rights of youngsters who embark on work experience placements and internships in the corporate world.
