Roofing firm prosecuted by HSE

A roofing company has been prosecuted after an employee at one of its factories sustained a severe wrist injury.
Euro Clad was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay costs of £6,000 after 46-year-old Darren Gillard had his wrist crushed between the bearer and the base frame of a machine that positions wooden blocks beneath packs of roof panels.
Mr Gillard subsequently had to undergo three operations to insert a metal plate into his wrist and a skin graft to treat his skin abrasions. He returned to employment four months later.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Euro Clad failed to prevent employees from being able to access dangerous parts machinery.
HSE inspector Paul Cartwright said: "The case demonstrates the importance of ensuring that machinery guards and protective systems remain effective.
Employers need to regularly monitor practices and rectify any problems promptly."
According to the HSE, out of all the main industry groups, construction has the largest number of fatal injuries.
