HSE fines brewery

The Health and Safety Executive has prosecuted a brewery for failing to ensure the safety of its employees.

Molson Coors Brewing Company was censured by the HSE after 64-year-old Peter Jackson was hit by a forklift truck, which trapped his legs beneath the forks, causing fractures to his foot and left wrist.

Molson was fined £31,000 and ordered to pay £33,042 costs by Cannock Magistrates' Court for failing to follow advice from the HSE to devise and implement safety transport measures after a previous visit in December 2007.

The company was also found to have contravened sections two and three of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Regulation three (one) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

HSE inspector Lyn Spooner said: "It is particularly disappointing to see such failings at a large company, which has the resources to deliver much better standards."

According to the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 199, all firms must ensure that appropriate clothing is worn for specific work-based tasks.
