Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals top compensation payout list

More money was paid out for compensation claims on behalf of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust than any other NHS Trust in England in 2010/11, newly released figures reveal.
A total of £15.3 million including compensation for cases of clinical negligence and legal fees was paid out by the trust - the highest amount ever dispensed under the clinical negligence system set up in 2003.
The NHS also paid out the largest amount in damages for the trust during the 2008/09 period. In the 2003/4 period, the compensation bill was just £2.2 million.
A spokeswoman for the trust told BBC News that the figure does not necessarily mean hospitals had a high number of claims, as settlements varied, and stressed that all NHS trusts have witnessed a rise in their contributions in recent years because the nature of claims settled has changed.
"Increasingly, claims are made to assist claimants throughout their life with annual payments being made to them in addition to lump sum payments," she said.
Other trusts that had high compensation payment figures included Barking and Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
