Legal aid cuts could increase demand for lawyers

As cuts to legal aid rise, demand for experts on family law, mediation and relationships could also witness a concurrent surge.

The ministry of justice plans to cut £300 million from the government's £2.1 billion legal aid bill, which experts have predicted may lead to people attempting to represent themselves in court.

Self representation could lead to myriad difficulties for independent litigants, who require expert and specialised legal advice.

According to Christina Tait, a spokesperson for Divorce Aid, those who choose to represent themselves will face a number of difficulties and hurdles.

"[It] will be very stressful as they will have to try to understand the law and apply it to their case whilst dealing with the obvious emotions when facing their spouse," she said.

Ms Tait added that the process could be especially harmful if children are involved.

Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky recently set a divorce settlement record after agreeing to pay his ex-wife Gilna Besharova as much as £220 million.
