AA found guilty of disability discrimination

A diabetic worker has made use of trade union support and an employment discrimination claim solicitor to win his case against his employer. Paul Bailey was successful in his disability discrimination claim against roadside recovery firm AA. The GMB member managed to show an Exeter Employment Tribunal that the company had discriminated against him because of his illness. It comes after the GMB, the union for AA workers, claimed that as many as 450 staff at the company are being targeted as managers seek to "performance manage" them out of their jobs. GMB regional officer Paul Grafton said: "The outcome for Mr Bailey is clearly a huge step forward to recognising diabetes within the workplace and forcing employers to act appropriately." He added that this should demonstrate to other staff at the firm that there is an alternative to being "performance managed" out the door. It comes after a Department for Work and Pensions steering group claimed that as many as seven million disabled people are being prevented from getting a job or fulfilling their potential because employers are imposing a "glass ceiling".
