'No scope for cuts to health and safety law'

The man in charge of a consultation on legislation affecting when people are able to seek advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton has been told to "merge laws, don't cut them". In its submission to Professor Lofstedt's review of health and safety rules, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is warning that there is "no scope for cuts". The government has already said it plans to reduce workplace inspection by a third to reduce the burden on the Health and Safety Executive. IOSH executive director of policy Dr Luise Vassie explained that unnecessary rules have already been scrapped. "Simplifying, not changing, some regulations would streamline what we already have, cutting down the number of laws and arguably making it easier for bosses to understand what they need to do," she said. In its submission to the review, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents urged caution over merging health and safety laws, suggesting that it could result in drop in protection for workers.
