Firm fined after worker is injured in roof fall

A mechanical engineering firm has been fined after a subcontractor suffered serious injuries to his back when he fell through a roof. In a case that highlights how staff may need to seek help from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton, Mechanical Solutions Ltd of Mansfield was prosecuted for failing to protect workers. Self-employed roofer Michael Hawkins, 23, fell six metres through a fragile roof at a large industrial building at Cotes Park Lane, Somercotes in 2009. He had six operations in as many months including a large skin graft to his back and has been unable to return to work since. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the company had failed to identify how fragile the roof was and did not provide safety harnesses. HSE inspector Carol Southerd said: "The company fell far short of the expected standard in the system of work. There was inadequate risk assessment, instruction and supervision." It was fined £10,000 after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety regulations. Falls from height remain one of the most common causes of serious workplace injuries. HSE figures reveal this type of accident was responsible for nearly 7,000 reportable injuries in 2009/10, including 20 fatalities. Posted by Paul Stevens
