HSE fines firm amid personal injury claim

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has fined a parcel company following a successful personal injury claim.
Tufnells Parcels Express was fined £150,000 and ordered to pay £19,000 in court costs after one of its employees Simon Mason was injured by a reversing heavy goods vehicle, leading to several operations for a fractured skull.
After several months recuperating under constant care while out of work, Mr Mason, 22, returned to employment in February.
Tufnells Parcels Express was found guilty of not controlling, assessing or adequately managing the dangers presented by the vehicles operating on the company's premises. The firm was also found guilty of failing to provide a safe and secure working environment.
HSE inspector Glyn Davies said: "This firm could have put in place a physical separation between the porters, moving vehicles and the loading bays and a safe way for porters and drivers to communicate with each other."
A recent survey by the HSE in conjunction with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health found that a third of serious workplace injuries are caused by slips.
