Anti-slip matting use urged to protect workers

Employees may be less likely to need to speak to a personal injury lawyer in Southampton if businesses make use of devices that can reduce the chances of dangerous incidents. Jill Joyce, senior policy and technical advisor at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, believes that anti-slip matting protects workers and members of the public by making it safer to walk on wet surfaces. Commercial kitchens and fast food restaurants are two workplaces where anti-slip flooring is beneficial, she explained. "There have been serious accidents where employees have slipped on wet floors and severely burned themselves with hot cooking oil, while trying to break their falls," Ms Joyce added. Factory workshops would also benefit from having something in place to prevent slips and trips. "In a recent accident, an employee slipped and fell on a woodworking machine and sustained major injuries," she explained. Slips and trips accounted for a fifth of all injuries in the manufacturing sector in 2009/10, according to research from Aviva. Posted by Paul Stevens
