EU regeneration funding back on track

Businesses seeking help from a commercial property solicitor to carry out development work have been told that vital European Union (EU) funding is once again available for local authorities. The European Commission (EC) confirmed it is lifting an interruption to payments of European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) in England following the implementation of a new regime of tighter controls on projects. It follows the EC's decision to temporarily interrupt the payment of funds after an annual audit found a number of irregularities in projects. Communities secretary Eric Pickles said the funding scheme had suffered from poor administration and fines dating back over ten years. The UK government, he added, has overhauled the management of programmes by bringing them in-house to minimise the liabilities. Regional development agencies had been responsible for the management of ERDF, but these are now to be abolished. Mr Pickles explained: "The measures that this government has taken have been recognised by the European Commission which has just announced that payments for the ERDF programme will restart, allowing vital regeneration work to continue."
