Firm fined after worker loses 3 fingers in accident

A company has been fined £30,000 in a case that highlights how basic safety failings can lead to an employee seeking advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
St Helens-based napkin and tablecloth manufacturer Emboss (Europe) Ltd was prosecuted after a worker lost three fingers in an industrial accident.
Liverpool Crown Court heard how 43-year-old Cheryl Bridge from St Helens was cleaning rollers with a cloth while they were still running.
The material was caught in the rollers, dragging her hand into the mechanism. Mrs Bridge lost her little finger and her first and third fingers were severed below the second joint.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that a safety guard was not used and the rollers were regularly cleaned while still in operation.
John McGrellis, HSE principal inspector, said: "This was a basic error that has ultimately led to a worker suffering terrible injuries to her right hand, which could and should have been prevented."
Manufacturing remains one of the most dangerous industries, accounting for nine per cent of the total UK workforce and 16 per cent of reportable injuries, according to figures compiled by the HSE.
