George Lucas loses stormtrooper replica court battle

George Lucas has lost his litigation and dispute resolution case against a British prop designer selling replica stormtrooper outfits.
Andrew Ainsworth, who designed the original outfits for the Star Wars trilogy, is not breaching copyright law, the Supreme Court said.
The ruling means he can continue to sell the replicas in the UK, though the court ruled he had breached US copyright law and could not export the outfits there.
Mr Ainsworth successfully argued that the stormtrooper costumes were not works of art, which would be covered for 70 years by copyright law.
The court agreed with him that they should instead be treated as functional works, meaning they are not subject to full copyright protection.
"This is a massive victory, a total victory, we've already got the champagne out," Mr Ainsworth told the BBC.
A Lucasfilm spokeswoman said: "These works of art should receive the full protection of UK copyright law, just as they do in the rest of the world."
