Asbestos victims group urges MPs to vote down civil litigation reforms

A group representing people suffering from the effects of asbestos exposure is urging MPs to block civil litigation reforms.
The Asbestos Victims Support Groups' Forum said people's compensation could be "wiped out" if plans to change the civil justice system go through.
Tony Whitson, chair of the forum, has written to every MP asking them to vote against the proposals to make claimants to pay the success fees of their asbestosis lawyer.
"Responsibility for legal costs will wipe out compensation for many asbestosis sufferers," he said.
Mr Whitson poured scorn on the "powerful insurance lobby", which he said is exploiting fears of a compensation culture despite falling personal injury claims.
"We think the provisions in this bill making asbestos victims share the risk of litigation are wrong. We think they have risked enough already," he added.
It comes as people suffering from asbestos-related illness have until August 1st to claim £5,000 from the government if they were exposed to the substance before regulations were introduced in the 1970s.
