Simpler planning framework published

Laws affecting those using a commercial property solicitor for issues such as contaminated land and planning have been "dramatically" streamlined, the government has said.

Announcing the new National Planning Policy Framework, the Department for Communities and Local Government claimed the new set of rules will be "simpler and swifter".

The framework streamlines over 1,000 pages of policy into just 52 pages, designed to make it much easier for developers to navigate and applications to be approved sooner.

Planning minister Greg Clark said the proposals, which are now open for consultation, "set out national planning policy more concisely, and in doing so make clearer the importance of planning to safeguarding our extraordinary environment and meeting the needs of communities, now and in the future".

Included in the plans is a presumption in favour of sustainable development. This is a key measure designed to speed applications and boost the economy.

Liz Peace, chief executive of the British Property Federation, welcomed the plans, noting that the new draft framework follows closely the version submitted by the Practitioners Advisory Group.

"On that basis we will have no problem in giving today's framework our ringing endorsement," she added.
