Unite pledges support to BAA workers

Unite will protect the conditions of workers at airport operator BAA if they are transferred to another employer under TUPE Regulation. The union said safeguarding employees' terms and conditions and pension rights would be a "top priority". It comes after the Competition Commission (CC) ruled that the airport operator must sell Stansted and either Glasgow or Edinburgh airports. BAA has already sold Gatwick after being ordered to do so by the regulator. The CC concluded that the sale of the airports is "fully justified", claiming that passengers and airlines would still benefit from greater competition with the airports under separate ownership. Unite national officer for civil air transport Brendan Gold said the union has always been against the forced sell off of BAA's airports, claiming that the decision puts workers at risk.
"Any attempt by a new owner taking over BAA's airports to undermine our members' conditions will be strongly resisted," he added.
